Adam Bohorič, Jurij Dalmatin in mesto Krško v 16. stoletju

The volume ('Adam Bohorič, Jurij Dalmatin, and the Town of Krško in the Sixteenth Century') sheds new light on the lives of important founders of literary Slovene, the Protestants Adam Bohorič (ca. 1524–1601/2) and Jurij Dalmatin (ca. 1547–1589), natives of the Krško (Germ. Gurkfeld) area. Much consideration is given to their origins and personal lives, with their paths closely linked in their native environment as well as in later periods. However, the main part of the volume concerns the town of Krško in the tumultuous sixteenth century, where Bohorič and Dalmatin first met, the older one a teacher to the other. During the period in question, the town on the Carniolan-Styrian provincial border enjoyed a time of prosperity. In addition to presenting overall conditions in the local environment, the chapter on Krško provides a detailed discussion of several questions that have so far remained unopened or (largely) unaddressed, most notably those regarding the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, which still constitute a considerable grey area due to lack of sources.

The volume marks the 440th anniversary of the publication of Dalmatin’s Slovene translation of the Bible and Bohorič’s first grammar of the Slovene language (1584), coinciding with the earliest known mention of Krško in Slovene.
