Kanadskim sanjam naproti. K zgodovini migracij Slovencev
The monograph ('Following the Canadian Dream: Towards a History of Slovenian Migration') by historian Urška Strle focuses on the migrations of Slovene men and women to Canada from the mid-19th century onward. The topic has not been the subject of many historiographical treatises although “the Slovenian diasporic community in Canada is lacking neither in terms of number nor traces left behind on Canadian society”, as put by the author herself. In its exposition, the book offers various historiographical, methodological and epistemological insights the author formed during her long tenure studying the topic at hand. The main part, however, focuses on a historiographical reconstruction of the migration processes. Such a focus allows a view on Canadian society, part of which Slovenian immigrants both became and shaped. The historiographical picture of Slovenian immigration to Canada is thus a contribution to the immigration history of Canada itself, which has never been the subject of a comprehensive study by the Slovenian historiography. Likewise, the book is also a contribution to Slovenian history due to the strong cultural, social, economic and political ties to their motherland kept by Slovenian Canadians.
