Alternativa. Osemdeseta: Pojmovnik novega kulturnega polja 2

'The alternative' has a relatively short history and carries a strong mobilising and emotional power. Especially from the 1960s through the 1980s, the term became a marker of social movements both in the capitalist West and the socialist East. Primarily positioned in relation to mainstream, mass, popular culture, it to a large extent overlapped with the phenomenon of youth subculture or counterculture.

The second volume of the lexicon The Eighties: A Conceptual Lexicon of the New Cultural Field, delves into the lives of the concept in the context of youth subcultures, places, technologies, and artistic practices, as well as theoretical and conceptual considerations, and daily political co-optation of the alternative in Slovenia and Yugoslavia. The author first presents a historical overview of the first recorded mentions of the term in the late 19th century, to establish a broader historical framework into which he situates the discussion on the alternative culture in the context of political, cultural, economic, and technological changes in Yugoslavia and Slovenia in the second half of the 20th century, particularly throughout the 1980s. The central part discusses scientific and journalistic production of the time, and is complemented with emphases from the interviews with some of the protagonists of the time, and the more recent reflections of the concept itself.
