Set against the cultural-historical background of the ancient Near East and the classical world, the monograph ('Love Is Strong as Death: Women, Emotions, and Social Relations in the Hebrew Bible and the Ancient World') explores emotions as a fundamental force of human experience, showing that they were not merely private states but social forces shaping law, religion, and social relations. At its center are female figures whose narratives reveal the diversity of their roles in society; as agents of decision-making, mediation, and care, they often quietly shape communal life. Their stories expose tensions of a patriarchal world – exclusion, abuse, silence, and endurance. Intergenerational relations also play an important role as a test of fidelity, responsibility, and justice. A special place is given to the Song of Songs as an original model of love, presenting love as dialogue, mutual recognition, and responsible closeness. Here, love becomes a bond that connects and endures – strong as death. At the intersection of literary analysis, the history of emotions, and cultural-historical inquiry, the monograph shows how ancient Near Eastern and classical views of emotion shaped European culture, literature, and art.
