Rock v opoziciji. Osemdeseta: Pojmovnik novega kulturnega polja 4
RIO, Rock in Opposition, was an international music movement from the turn of the 1970s into the 1980s, which also established itself on the Ljubljana and broader Slovenian alternative scene. RIO, as a name, term and concept gradually expanded beyond its narrower meaning, tied to the actors of the movement or collective. Particularly after its decline, it became established as a distinct category and label for unusual, eccentric, typically left-leaning, progressive rock practices within the context of broader umbrella categories such as "avant-garde", "art-" or "experimental" rock.
The fourth volume of the lexicon The Eighties: A Conceptual Lexicon of the New Cultural Field first situates the RIO phenomenon within the broader historical context of the formation and development of the music movement, particularly in Great Britain and France, and its influences, transfer and adoption within the Slovenian alternative milieu of the 1980s. The authors then present the phenomenon through a more detailed discussion of the musical-cultural environment that took shape through a range of institutions and venues, most notably ŠKD Forum, Radio Študent and ŠKUC, as well as festivals and clubs, before turning to a discussion of the key bands – Begnagrad, D'Pravda and Srp. Finally, the authors situate the RIO phenomenon within a broader Yugoslav and international context, with an emphasis on its role in connecting European actors and scenes.
