Naravoslovje 1. Kozmologija in geografija

Authors

Pliny the Elder

Pliny the Elder's Historia Naturalis is one of the most comprehensive works preserved from Roman antiquity, and also one of the most technically and terminologically demanding. Specialist literature often refers to it as an encyclopaedia of the ancient world. Pliny combined extensive essays in the field of applied sciences, in which he describes materials, natural processes, and phenomena, primarily from the perspective of the natural sciences (chemistry, physics, biology, etc.), but always also from the perspective of the usefulness of various natural resources for humans in everyday life. He drew the content for these essays from existing sources, using 146 Roman writers and 327 Greek writers. Naravoslovje 1 is the first book of the complete translation of Pliny's work. It contains a detailed table of contents for all 36 books (1) and books devoted to cosmology (2) and geography (3–6). It is accompanied by a book by translator Matej Hriberšek, with an introductory study, detailed commentary, and index, as well as biographical descriptions of Pliny's sources and two maps.
