Dediščina aleksandrink in spomini njihovih potomcev

Aleksandrinke [“women of Alexandria"] were women and girls from the Goriška region who starting in the second half of the 19th century worked in Egypt as nannies, maids, cooks, governesses and nursemaids. For years they were most often referred to as “servants with calluses on their souls", “the tragic migration", “the unfortunate phenomenon", “Beautiful Vidas" (‘Lepa Vida’ is a Slovene mythological story about a girl who goes abroad to seek her fortune to find only sorrow). Only recently have these expressions given way to descriptions such as: “upstanding, ambitious, our first worldly women", “not servants, but second mothers and friends", “Slovene women". More than ever before they have distanced themselves from the role of “nursemaids from Goriška" and “women from Primorska" and become the “first worldly Slovene women" and “Slovenes". The storytellers in the book are descendants of aleksandrinkas, who speak of the changing attitudes towards their grandmothers and great-grandmothers and are concerned with the preservation of their heritage.
