Glas kamna spod Čavna. Zgodbe kamnarjev in zidarjev iz srednje Vipavske doline
This comprehensive monograph is Božidar Premrl’s 24th standalone book, in which he examines the history of stonemasonry and stone culture in the Primorska region. From an ethnological and art-historical perspective, the author presents the natural, architectural and cultural heritage, as well as its creators, in the central Vipava Valley – from Ajdovščina to Šempas and Ozeljan – covering the period from the mid-15th century to the present day. The book is further distinguished by its systematic and comprehensive presentation of the folk terminology for various types of rock in the central Vipava Valley, descriptions of traditional manual techniques for improving farmland, quarrying, working and installing stone, and illustrations of typical examples of rural architecture and its representative stonework elements, particularly portals. Particular mention should also be made of the substantial chapters on sacred architecture and stone religious monuments, as well as their creators.
The book is a significant achievement in the fields of ethnology and art history, as the publication of oral accounts by stonemasons, bricklayers and the rural population regarding traditional manual techniques contributes to the preservation of intangible cultural and technical heritage; it is also of interest to the wider Slovenian public.
