Historična topografija Kranjske (do 1500). Druga dopolnjena izdaja
The first volume in the new series of historical-topographical handbooks covers the territory of the Duchy of Carniola up to the year 1500. It includes 3,608 Carniolan toponyms—villages, hamlets, market towns, cities, castles, manors, field and water names, and others—along with their historical variants as attested in sources up to 1500 (such as charters, urbaria, feudal, accounting, notarial, and cartulary records).
The entries are arranged alphabetically, and each historical form of a name is accompanied by the date of its attestation, a reference to the source in which it appears, the location of the source (archive, library, etc.), and, when applicable, its publication reference. The corpus as a whole contains over 24,400 historical variants of Carniolan geographical names (paleonyms).
A little over four years after the publication of the first edition of Historical Topography of Carniola (2016), we are pleased to present a revised and expanded edition (February 2021). The second edition comprises 1,841 pages (excluding the final register)—approximately 40% more than its predecessor—and introduces 445 newly identified locations, bringing the total to 4,040, along with over 9,000 new paleonyms, for a total of nearly 34,500.
The work is based on 89 documented charter collections from 62 archives and over 300 codices and manuscripts from Slovenian, Austrian, Italian, Croatian, Hungarian, German, and Czech archives and libraries.
The previously underrepresented entries Ljubljana and Škofja Loka have been thoroughly revised and expanded, all identified errors corrected, and several previously unresolved locations newly identified.
For new entries, an enhanced methodology has been applied, resulting in richer contextual data: broader quotations from original sources that offer a more comprehensive view of the properties, persons, and events associated with each location.
Together with an accompanying online application linked to a digital map (http://topografija.zrc-sazu.si/), the handbook will be of great interest not only to specialists in various disciplines (historians, geographers, archaeologists, ethnologists, linguists, etc.) but also to local historians and history enthusiasts.
